Recycled Material in Vinyl Tiles

If you’re building or designing environmentally-responsible spaces, you know that there are many aspects that go into making a product eco-friendly. Sometimes, ascertaining whether or not a building material is eco-friendly is not simple. For example, a product that is sourced from renewable resources may also require replacing after a relatively short amount of time, or a product that requires comparatively more energy to manufacture may release fewer emissions during the manufacturing process. In addition, you may want to consider whether or not the product can be recycled after it has been removed.

The vinyl industry has long been concerned with creating products that both use recycled materials, and that can be recycled after use. About 76% of vinyl manufactured is used in the construction industry because of its durability, easy installation and cost effectiveness. The Vinyl Institute, an umbrella organization for vinyl manufacturers, reports that due to widespread post-industrial recycling, the majority of reclaimed vinyl ends up being used to manufacture other products. Some leaders in the vinyl tile industry are earning kudos – and meeting LEED criteria – for creating flooring that is safer for you, and safer for the planet.

Company Profile: LSI

As with any product, selecting the right company will help to ensure that the materials you’re using are of high calibre and feature eco-friendly aspects. You’ll want to find a vinyl tile manufacturer that uses recycled material in its tiles, and that has products that meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) credit criteria. In North America, look for a company that works with the Canadian Green Building Council and/or the US Green Building Council. These organizations can help you to ascertain the "green” qualities of various materials and of the companies that make them.

For example, Ontario-based LSI Floors makes premium vinyl floor tiles featuring cool modern design elements that are suitable for any type of public space. Their tiles use glass-bead technology to enhance appearance and create a safe, slip-resistant surface, and they also manufacture anti-microbial tiles for use in healthcare settings. LSI’s clients include museums, automobile showrooms, restaurants and nightclubs, television stations, retail settings, hospitals, office spaces, medical offices, and many others. LSI vinyl tiles support two LEED credits: one for using recycled content, and one for indoor air quality. LSI was also one of the first to incorporate DINP into its PVC manufacturing process, a healthier alternative to DENP. And at the end of its life, LSI’s flooring is 100% recyclable.

Other Considerations

In addition to using up to 20% recycled material, producing products that meet stringent State of California criteria for low VOC emissions in schools, and in being conscientious about the manufacturing process, LSI’s vinyl tile products are known for their longevity. Durability and longevity are also important when you’re choosing eco-friendly products, since the more often a building material needs to be replaced, the less "green” it becomes. LSI products, built to last, come with a ten-year warranty.

And of course, LSI is known for its unique and inspiring designs, from ultra-realistic depictions of natural environments such as stones, grass, water, or ice to fun and funky pop-art and whimsical patterns. The company also carries a wide range of solid colors and wood grain.
